The Honorary Badge for Art and Science, also called Litteris et Artibus, was established on 18 August 1887 by Franz Joseph I as Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, in agreement with both prime ministers. It replaced the Imperial and Royal Gold Medal for Art and Science, established in 1835 by Emperor Ferdinand I, which, unlike the honorary badge, was not wearable.
