The Order of Merit of the Armed Forces (Ordem do Mérito das Forças Armadas) is a decoration established by Decree No. 91,343 of 18 June 1985. Its purpose is to reward members of the Army, Navy, and Air Force who have rendered distinguished services to the Armed Forces as a whole, or to a particular service individually, with benefits extending to the others; members of the Auxiliary Forces who have rendered distinguished services to the Armed Forces; Brazilian civilians, and foreign military personnel and civilians who have rendered distinguished services to the Armed Forces; and national or foreign military and civilian organizations that have become deserving of the Armed Forces’ special recognition.
The Order of Merit of the Armed Forces was replaced in 2002 by the Order of Defense Merit (Ordem do Mérito da Defesa), and all its members were transferred to the rolls of the new order. Recipients of the Order of Merit of the Armed Forces became members of the rolls of the Order of Defense Merit.
