The War Merit Cross for Women and Maidens was instituted on 13 September 1917 by Duke Ernst August of Brunswick as a reward for services to the war.
The badge is a bronze cross. On the arms of the cross, from top to bottom, are the words “For self-sacrificing service in the war.” In the center of the reverse is the year 1914. Between the arms of the cross is a circular ring interrupted by them. On it, the intertwined initials EA (Ernst August) and VL (Viktoria Luise) appear alternately. The four sections of the ring are surmounted by a three-dimensional ducal crown.
The decoration was worn on a bow on a sulfur-yellow ribbon with two dark-blue edge stripes and one central stripe.
