The Quebec Council of the French Language, which became the Superior Council of the French Language on October 1, 2002, established the Order of Francophones of America on July 3, 1978, at the same time as the July 3, 1608 Prize. This distinction, awarded annually to a very small number of individuals, aims to recognize the merits of people who devote themselves to maintaining and fostering the French language of the Americas.
