The Scale Order (Schuppenorden), also called the Order of the Scale (del Scama) and the Order of the Fish Scale, was founded in 1427 by King Don Juan II of Castile. 1417 is also given as its foundation date.
Other sources give the foundation date as 1420 and describe the order’s insignia as an emblem worn on the helmet. It was also worn on the white order’s mantle as a sky-blue scaled cross. 1318 is also given as the year of foundation, and the order’s purpose was the defense of the Catholic religion and the fight against the Moors. Another author dates the order to 1429.
The insignia was a red scaled cross worn on a white tunic and mantle. Other depictions describe the decoration as a scaled ring with a quartered coat of arms in red and silver placed at its center. The knightly order became extinct at the beginning of the 16th century.
Above the coat of arms of the Parsbergs, the four insignia of the medieval knightly orders were displayed in the first row: the Lindworm Order and the Dragon Order. The second row showed the Scale Order and an unidentified one. It is believed that this order may be associated with the “Society” of the Count of Savoy.
