The Ernst Moritz Arndt Medal [Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Medaille] was a non-state award of the National Council of the National Front of the GDR, established and first awarded in 1955. It was intended to recognize achievements in the struggle to secure peace. By 1975, it had been awarded about 10,000 times, mostly to cultural workers. Well-known recipients of the medal included Johannes R. Becher, Heinrich Ehmsen, Karl-Heinz Jentsch, and Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler. The medal ceased to be awarded in 1975. It was succeeded by the Honorary Medal of the National Front. It should be distinguished from the Ernst Moritz Arndt Plaque, awarded by the Federation of Expellees.
