The Honor Medal (Ehrenmedaille) was established by Elector Karl Theodor von Dalberg to reward and recognize the Frankfurt troops who fought alongside France in Spain in 1809.
The round medal depicts the bust of its founder facing right, with the inscription CARL THEODOR FÜRST PRIMAS. After Frankfurt was elevated to a grand duchy, the inscription read CARL GROSHERZOG ZU FRANKFURT. On the reverse, surrounded by a wreath tied together at the bottom, with laurel leaves on the left and oak leaves on the right, is the four-line inscription DAS VATERLAND SEINEM TAPFEREN VERTEIDIGER. Below the inscription are crossed flags, a cannon barrel, five cannonballs and a laurel branch.
The award was worn on a crimson ribbon on the left side of the chest.
The decoration was awarded in gold and silver.
