The Commemorative Badge for Airship Crews (Erinnerungsabzeichen für die Besatzung der Luftschiffe) was instituted by Reichswehr Minister Otto Geßler on 1 August 1920.
There were two versions, for Army and Navy airship personnel. On application, it was awarded to officers, warrant officers, non-commissioned officers and enlisted men from former airship crews who were serving, inactive or on leave and who had completed at least one year of service aboard operational front-line airships during the war. This requirement could be waived in cases of injury or accident during airship service, captivity, or exceptionally distinguished service.
The oval badge consists of a wreath of laurel leaves (below) and oak leaves (above), bound three times at the bottom and topped with a ribbon bow that slightly projects above it. In the center is a depiction of an Army airship, resting on the wreath at its sides.
The award for Navy airship personnel depicts a Navy airship and, above the ribbon bow, the German Imperial Crown.
The award was worn as a pin badge on the left breast.
