The Fire Service Cross of Merit was instituted on 25 February 1901 by Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria for long service and contributions to firefighting in the Kingdom of Bavaria.
The gilded cross shows the raised bust of the founder, facing left, in the oval central medallion. Around it, on a light-blue-enamelled band, is the inscription LUITPOLD, PRINCE REGENT OF BAVARIA, with the year 1901. On the reverse is the inscription FOR MERIT IN THE FIRE SERVICE.
The award was worn on a sky-blue ribbon with six white stripes on the left breast.
