The Rescue Medal of the State of Berlin was instituted on 29 May 1953 by the House of Representatives under its then president, Otto Suhr, and has since been a state recognition for a successful rescue from danger carried out at the risk of one’s own life. It was announced by Governing Mayor Walther Schreiber.
