The Wilhelm Leuschner Medal is the highest award of the state of Hesse. It was instituted on 29 September 1964 by the then Hessian Minister-President Georg-August Zinn on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Wilhelm Leuschner’s death. The decree establishing the medal was published more than a year later in the Law and Ordinance Gazette for the State of Hesse, together with the guidelines for awarding the Wilhelm Leuschner Medal, which had been issued on the same date. The medal was most recently awarded in 2025, posthumously to Margot Friedländer.
