The Barcelona Medal of Honor [Medalla d'Honor de Barcelona] is a distinction awarded annually by the Barcelona City Council to distinguish individuals or legal entities, national or foreign, who have stood out in defending the city, as well as in defending civic virtues and values.
It was established in 1997, during the tenure of Barcelona mayor Joan Clos, on the occasion of the centenary of the annexation of the surrounding municipalities to Barcelona, with solemn events held annually in the Saló de Cent.
Later, in 2012, the Barcelona City Council reformed the regulations governing existing distinctions and medals and established four categories of distinctions:
The Gold Medal of the City of Barcelona [Medalla d'Or de la Ciutat de Barcelona] is the highest distinction, intended to honor individuals or legal entities, national or foreign, who have stood out for their extraordinary personal merits or for having provided outstanding services to the city.
