The Medal of the Cortes of Aragon (Medalla de las Cortes de Aragón) is the highest distinction awarded by the Aragonese parliamentary institution, by which it is known. Its purpose is to reward people or entities for excellence in their work when that work has distinguished them in defending the values and identity of Aragon. The medal may also be awarded to organizations, centers, or groups that, although they do not have legal personality, possess a publicly recognized social identity. It was established by an agreement of the Bureau of the Cortes of Aragon adopted on 17 February 1986. It is currently governed by the Resolution of the Presidency of the Cortes of Aragon of 11 November 1996, concerning the awarding of the Medal of the Cortes of Aragon.
This decoration is honorary, as it does not entail any financial benefit. It is awarded by a resolution adopted by the Presidency of the Cortes of Aragon, and the decision must receive the favorable opinion of the Bureau and the Board of Spokespersons of the chamber, after a proposal for the award has first been made by the Presidency or by the spokespersons of the parliamentary groups.
