The Galicia Medal (Medalla de Galicia) is an honorary distinction awarded by the Government of Galicia to people or institutions for their merits in serving Galicia in any aspect of social, cultural, or economic life.
Established in 1984 with a single category, gold, only four medals were awarded up to 1991, two of them posthumously. From that year, two more categories (silver and bronze) were created, and awards became more frequent, reaching as many as 34 medals in a year. From 2006, its categories were reduced once again to a single one—the gold medal—in order to rationalize the award and restore its highest value.
It is the highest decoration awarded by the Government of Galicia. Its presentation ceremony usually coincides with 25 July, Galicia’s National Day.
