The Madrid Community Medal [Medalla de la Comunidad de Madrid] is a Spanish civil decoration awarded by the autonomous community after which it is named, in recognition of the merits of institutions and natural or legal persons who have distinguished themselves through service to this region in any field of activity. It is governed by Law 3/1985 of 22 March on the Madrid Community Medal. Its immediate predecessor was the Medal of Honour and Gratitude of the Province of Madrid. It has two classes: gold medal and silver medal. It may be awarded to both individuals and entities. The award of these medals is limited to a maximum of two in the gold class and six in the silver class, although those awarded as a matter of courtesy or reciprocity are not counted.
This distinction is awarded on the proposal of the President of the Community, by agreement of the Governing Council. Prior proceedings are required for its award, except where the proposal is made on personal initiative for reasons of courtesy or reciprocity. Proposals are admitted for processing by the Minister of the Presidency, who appoints a commission to assess the candidates’ merits.
