The Medal for Merit in Road Safety [Medalla al Mérito de la Seguridad Vial] is a Spanish civil decoration intended to reward individuals or entities that have distinguished themselves through their activities in support of traffic or road safety: by performing a heroic act or an act of exemplary solidarity; by providing significant assistance to the authorities and agents responsible for its regulation and control; or by rendering services considered outstanding in technical or educational fields, or in the economic or social sphere. This medal is governed by Decree 2464/1974 of 9 August, which established the Medal “For Merit in Road Safety” (Official State Gazette, 9 September 1974), and by the implementing Order of the Ministry of the Interior of 6 November 1974 (Official State Gazette, 19 November 1974).
Members of the Directorate-General for Traffic, the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard, or municipal traffic police may receive this decoration only for acts performed off duty, or when it is considered that they should receive it for carrying out acts, work, or services in the normal performance of their duties.
