The Gold Medal of the City of Barcelona is the highest distinction awarded by Barcelona City Council to distinguish individuals or legal entities, nationals or foreigners, who have stood out for their extraordinary personal merits or for having rendered significant services to the city.
This distinction is the successor to the “City Medal,” created in 1950.
In 2012, Barcelona City Council reformed the regulations to reorganize the existing distinctions and medals and regulated the creation of four categories of distinctions:
The Gold Medal of the City of Barcelona is the highest distinction, intended to distinguish individuals or legal entities, nationals or foreigners, who have stood out for their extraordinary personal merits or for having rendered significant services to the city.
The Gold Medal for Cultural, Scientific, Civic or Sporting Merit is recognition of the careers of people or organizations that have worked for the benefit of the city of Barcelona. The medals recognize the quality of the work done by these citizens in the various branches of culture, science, civic life or sport.
