The Order of Burgundy [Orden de Borgoña] was a military institution founded by Emperor Charles V.
After the conquest of the Kingdom of Tunis, wishing to perpetuate this memory and give public testimony of gratitude for the special favors received from divine providence, he founded this order on June 25, 1535. Its badge was a collar resembling the Order of the Golden Fleece, with a saltire cross hanging from it bearing the inscription “Barbarie.”
Despite the decline of this order, the Cross of Burgundy continued to be used in Spain on military flags to the present day, and people granted a position in the royal household continued to take their oath upon appointment using the sign of the Cross of Burgundy.
