The Order of the Mirror [Orden des Spiegels], also known as the Order of the Mirror or the Order of the Mirror of the Virgins Mary, was a Spanish order of chivalry. It was founded by Infante Ferdinand of Castile in 1410. The occasion was his victory over the Moors at Antequera.
The order’s chain consisted of griffins alternating with lilies. The order’s attire consisted of a white outer garment with a black cross, worn over black underclothing. A mirror carried by the knights may have given the order its name; it was considered effeminate and gave rise to mockery.
