The Commemorative Medal of the Battle of Verdun is a decoration created by the city of Verdun on 20 November 1916 to commemorate the Battle of Verdun. It is not an official medal, but the badge of the “Soldiers of Verdun.” Only veterans of the French or allied armies who served on active duty between 31 July 1914 and 11 November 1918 in the Verdun sector, between Argonne and Saint-Mihiel, in the area subject to artillery bombardment, are entitled to this medal. The names of the Soldiers of Verdun are entered in the register deposited in the crypt of the Victory Monument, erected in the very center of the city, and in the books of honor kept in the Verdun City War Museum.
