The Military Decoration [Décoration militaire] was established in 1791 by the National Constituent Assembly, leading to the abolition of the military orders of the Ancien Régime and a ban on wearing their insignia.
The decree of 1 January 1791 abolished the Royal and Military Order of Saint Louis and the Institution of Military Merit, which were replaced by one and the same distinction, the Military Decoration.
Article 1 of this decree stated that “the Military Decoration shall be awarded to officers of all arms and all ranks after twenty-four full years of service.” This new decoration no longer referred to religion, whereas the Cross of Saint Louis was reserved for Catholic officers.
The insignia awarded nevertheless remained the Knight’s Cross of Saint Louis.
On 30 July 1791, the Constituent Assembly abolished all orders of chivalry, prohibited the wearing of their decorations, and prohibited mention of them in official documents.
