The Order of Commercial and Industrial Merit [Ordre du Mérite commercial et industriel], established by decree dated 29 June 1961 in France, replaced the Order of Commercial Merit, whose purpose had been to reward services rendered to France’s economic activity and foreign trade by people distinguished for their professional merit. It was administered by the Minister of Industry and Trade, assisted by an Order council.
This ministerial order has in fact been discontinued since 1 January 1964, but surviving current holders of its grades continue to enjoy the privileges attached to them under Article 38 of Decree No. 63-1196 establishing a national Order of Merit.
