The Order of Tourist Merit [Ordre du Mérite touristique], created by decree dated 27 May 1949 in France, was intended to reward people who had rendered outstanding services to the cause of tourism and contributed to its development both in France and abroad.
The order had three classes: Knight, Officer and Commander, and was administered by the Minister of Tourism, assisted by an order council comprising ten members, all of whom were Commanders by right.
