The Colonial Police Medal was a United Kingdom decoration established by King George VI on 10 May 1938. During the period when the British Empire administered colonies and mandated territories around the world, police officers, as well as military personnel, were sent to maintain order. This is still the case in a number of remaining territories.
The medal was established in London by the King of the United Kingdom, but the governments of the Commonwealth were also permitted to award it. Australia had its own overseas territories.
The medal was awarded for “courage and devoted service” in the police and fire services of the colonies and overseas territories.
A split took place in 1940.
The King's Medal for Police and Fire Service, known after 19 May 1954 as the Queen's Police Medal and the Queen's Fire Service Medal, in the United Kingdom and the Dominions.
The Colonial Police and Fire Service Medal, called the Overseas Territories Police Medal since 2012, in the colonies and mandated territories. This medal was gradually replaced by their own medals in the Dominions and overseas territories.
