The Medal of the Struggle was an honorary medal awarded by the newly established Greek state to all those who had taken part in the Greek Revolution of 1821.
It was established by Royal Decree on 20 May 1834.
It was divided into three classes:
Silver, awarded to officers
Bronze, to non-commissioned officers
Iron, to soldiers, regular and irregular, as well as to anyone else who took part in the struggle for freedom.
It was worn on the left side of the chest and attached to a blue ribbon. It was also accompanied by a certificate, signed by the king for officers and by the secretary of the Minister of State for others.
Those who were honored received the following privileges:
to have precedence in elections
to carry weapons without a permit
to receive an honorary place alongside the authorities at all celebrations
to be exempt from all physical labor in the general services of the state.
