The Hessian Military Merit Cross was instituted by Grand Duke Ludwig III on 12 September 1870, the birthday of Crown Prince Ludwig, “to reward outstanding merit in the face of the enemy” during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71.
Only military personnel could be awarded the decoration, “who have distinguished themselves in the face of the enemy through particular insight, bravery and presence of mind.” The Grand Duke of Hesse decided on awards on the recommendation of the command of the Grand Ducal Hessian Division.
