The Order of Merit was a decoration of the Independent State of Croatia, established as a “visible sign of recognition for merits earned in peace and in war for the Croatian people and the Independent State of Croatia.” The order had two forms: one, intended for Christians, was shaped like the baptismal font of Prince Višeslav (around 800), while the other, shaped like a “Bosnian lily,” was awarded to Muslims. The method of wearing the ribbon was the same for Christians and Muslims. The Grand Cross was worn on a sash from the right shoulder to the left hip, where the ribbon was arranged in a bow. An eight-pointed silver star was worn on the left side of the chest.
The 1st Class Order of Merit with Star was worn on a neck ribbon, with a smaller silver star on the chest. Women wore the ribbon arranged in a bow, fastened to their clothing with a pin. The 1st Class Order was worn without a star, in the same way as the 1st Class Order with Star.
The 2nd Class Order of Merit was worn without a ribbon, fastened on the left side of the chest.
The 3rd Class Order of Merit was worn by men on a triangular ribbon, and by women on a narrow ribbon arranged in a bow.
