Originally created as a simple “Commemorative Ribbon for the Current War in Libya,” the Commemorative Cross of the Italo-German Campaign in Africa was an unofficial Italian medal intended for Italian and German troops who had taken part in the North African Campaign of 1940–1943. Although this medal was approved by the Supreme Command of the Armed Forces in Libya, it was never officially adopted by the Italian Army, whereas it was considered an authorized award by the German Army.
