The Cross of Merit of the Aizsargi (Aizsargu Nopelnu krusts) was the highest badge of honour of the Latvian Aizsargi organization from 1927 to 1940. It was awarded for heroism or outstanding work in organizing and training the Aizsargi.
The badge of honour “Cross of Merit of the Aizsargi” was established in 1927. Its purpose was to honour people who had performed selfless work in maintaining internal peace and order in the state. The award of the badge was decided by the Aizsargi Board, which consisted of the Chief of the Aizsargi and one elected Aizsargi representative from each of Latvia’s regions. The award had to be approved by the Minister of the Interior. State officials, soldiers and foreigners could also be awarded the Cross of Merit of the Aizsargi.
The badge of honour was a white enamelled cross with gold edges, set against a wreath of oak leaves. In the centre was a diamond-shaped panel with a red background, depicting a hand gripping a sword. The ribbon was red, white and gold. The badge of honour was to be worn on holidays and at ceremonial events. The design was by the artist Kasparsons.
