The Most Honourable Order of Malacca, called in Malay “Darjah Utama Negeri Melaka” or the Most Honourable Order of Melaka, was instituted in 1978 by the Commissioner of the King of Malacca, appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, or Yang Di-Pertuan Negeri. It is a general order of merit of the territory of Malacca.
The three orders of Malacca are distinguished by their prefixes, but their ribbons are identical. They could therefore be considered a single order with multiple grades, especially since the Commander is regarded as belonging to the “Order of Malacca,” without an ornamental epithet.
In 1978, the “Most Honourable Order of Malacca,” called in Malay “Darjah Utama Negeri Melaka” or the Most Honourable Order of Melaka, and the “Most Illustrious Order of Malacca,” called in Malay “Darjah Cemerlang Seri Melaka” or the “Most Illustrious Order of Melaka,” were established.
The “Most Exalted Order of Malacca,” called in Malay “Darjah Gemilang Seri Melaka” or the Most Exalted Order of Melaka, was instituted in 1983.
The ribbon is the same in all cases. The lower rank, Commander in the Order of Malacca, has to do without a prefix altogether.
