The Order Augusto César Sandino [Orden Augusto César Sandino] is Nicaragua’s highest decoration.
It was established by Decree No. 851 of the National Reconstruction Government Junta on October 28, 1981, and regulated on November 6, 1981. It bears its name in commemoration of Augusto César Sandino (1895–1934), Nicaragua’s greatest national hero.
It is an order for nationals and foreigners, awarded “in recognition of exceptional services rendered to the Homeland or to Humanity.” It comprises three grades, named in memory of events in Nicaraguan history, in descending order:
Battle of San Jacinto;
Battle of Coyotepe;
Battle of Ocotal.
