The Honorary Badge for Master Gunner of the Royal Netherlands Navy (Eereteeken voor Meester-Kanonnier der Koninklijke Marine) was established by Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands by Royal Decree of 19 March 1909. Until 1940, the badge was awarded once a year to the winner of the Royal Netherlands Navy’s annual shooting competition. The best gunner received a silver star, and a silver-gilt star for a second victory.
The decoration has never been abolished, but has not been awarded since the liberation.
The badge is shaped like an eight-pointed star with rays. A blue-enamelled medallion is set in the centre of the star. This round medallion depicts a silver fouled anchor and two silver cannons. The medallion is surrounded by an orange ring edged in gold, bearing the words “MEESTER-KANONNIER” in gold lettering.
The reverse of the star is flat.
The ribbon from which the decoration was worn is the colour of the Dutch flag. On the ribbon bar, a pin in the shape of a silver anchor was worn.
