The Honorary Medal for Art and Science (Eremedaille voor Kunst en Wetenschap) was attached to the House Order of Orange in the silver and gold grades from 1905 to 1969, and has since continued to exist independently of this House Order in a single grade: Gold.
This decoration is not a general Dutch royal decoration awarded under the authority of the Council of Ministers, but is awarded by the King as head of his House, outside the ministerial responsibility or involvement of the Council of Ministers. There is also an Honorary Medal for Zeal and Ingenuity.
The large round medal was modelled by the sculptor Pier Pander.
