The Badge for Action in Combat Conditions (Insigne voor Optreden onder Gevechtsomstandigheden), also known as the Combat Badge, was established by the Dutch government in October 2008. Military personnel who “have actually fought during a deployment” are honoured with this badge in the form of a brooch.
A condition for its award is that the recipient “has performed actions under fire that were not solely for their own safety”. It must be an operation “involving hostile action with direct fire or comparable combat conditions”.
Those who took part in a military operation involving hostile action with direct fire or comparable combat conditions are eligible. The person concerned must have taken part in the fighting in accordance with the applicable rules of engagement.
This includes any form of active and appropriate action that was not solely in the context of personal safety. The Combat Badge is intended as lasting recognition alongside the decorations system.
