The Commemorative Badge for Special Missions (Herinneringsteken bijzondere missies) is a Dutch decoration. It is a bronze “M” pinned to the ribbon of the Dutch Peace Operations Commemorative Medal when no other decoration and no other ribbon have been instituted for that medal. Although it is in fact no more than a bronze “M” on the ribbon, it is recognized as a separate Dutch decoration. A bronze “M” is also pinned to the ribbon bar.
The badge, instituted by Royal Decree of 14 October 1999, is awarded to “those who, on behalf of the government, have been part of a multinational special mission for at least three consecutive months, provided that no ribbon with other colours has been established for that operation. In the case of repeated participation in special missions, the Commemorative Badge is awarded with an Arabic numeral 2 or higher”.
The commemorative badge was originally added to the UN Peace Operations Commemorative Medal. However, this medal was abolished by Royal Decree of 23 March 2001 and replaced by the Peace Operations Commemorative Medal. The Commemorative Badge for Special Missions is now attached to the ribbon of that medal.
