The Marriage Medal 1966 was the third Dutch marriage medal. Commemorative medals had also been instituted for the marriages of Wilhelmina and Henry, and Juliana and Bernhard. With this medal, the tradition of using the heraldic colours of the groom in the ribbon, in addition to orange, was continued.
The marriage medal was instituted by Queen Juliana by Royal Decree as a commemorative medal on the occasion of the marriage of Crown Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands to Claus von Amsberg. The approximately 3,100 medals were awarded to members of the royal household, guests from the Netherlands and abroad, representatives of other royal houses, and the lower-ranking members of the Dutch royal household. Medals were also awarded to the mounted escort and the officers of the cordon.
The design of the medal was by the artist Katinka Bruyn-van Rood.
The round medal has a diameter of 30.5 millimetres. The obverse shows the left-facing portraits of Beatrix and Claus in a polished die against a shiny background. Beatrix is not wearing a diadem in this portrait.
The reverse shows the intertwined monogram of the royal couple, “C” and “B”. A small arched crown is placed above it.
