By Royal Decree No. 40 of 10 March 1905, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands instituted a separate cross for officers of the Naval Steam Service (Marine Stoomvaartdienst). It was the same shape as the Decoration for Long Service as an Officer, instituted in 1844, but the cross and the clasp placed on it are silver. This silver cross is the same as that of the officers of the rifle corps, which were disbanded in 1901, but the riflemen wore it on a plain orange ribbon.
The decoration was never abolished, but fell into disuse when the Naval Steam Service was incorporated into the Royal Netherlands Navy on 1 January 1949. Engine-room officers were once considered unworthy of wearing the same distinction as long-serving seagoing officers on the bridge, but this discrimination was ended after 1949.
