The Decoration for Long Service as an Officer of the Royal Netherlands Navy Reserve (Onderscheidingsteken voor Langdurige Dienst als officier der Koninklijke Marine Reserve) was awarded from 1896 to 1926. At that time, the Royal Netherlands Navy distinguished between decorations for reserve officers, active-service officers, and officers of the steam engineering service, who were responsible for the propulsion of ships.
By Royal Decree No. 40 of 10 March 1896, Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands instituted a separate cross for reserve officers of the Royal Netherlands Navy. It was the same shape as the silver-gilt Decoration for Long Service as an Officer, instituted in 1844, but the clasp bearing the year was silver. The reservists wore the decoration on a plain orange ribbon.
The decoration was abolished on 1 January 1926. Since then, all officers and reserve officers of the Royal Netherlands Navy have received the same “gin cross” on their service anniversaries.
