Stang shooting is a rapid-fire shooting competition in the Norwegian Association of Rifle Clubs (Det frivillige Skyttervesen), in which competitors aim to score as many hits as possible on two different targets in two rounds of 25 seconds. The competition was first held at the National Shooting Festival (landsskytterstevnet) in Elverum in 1912, and is named after Colonel Georg Stang (1858–1907). Originally, the event was intended to simulate a surprise attack. The Norwegian Championship in Stang shooting is held annually at the National Shooting Festival, and the winner is awarded the Stang Medal (Colonel Georg Stang Memorial Medal; Oberst Georg Stangs minnemedalje), the only medal in Norwegian sport made of pure gold.
Stang shooting is usually a uniquely Norwegian event, but it was part of the Nordic Championship in 1957, when Edgar Atseth won the gold medal for Norway in both Stang shooting and rapid field shooting.
