The Civil Merit Medal was instituted in the spring of 1814 by Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig of Oldenburg shortly after his return from exile in Russia, to reward “genuine German loyalty and Stoic virtue.”
The medal was struck in gold and silver, but was not awarded.
A crown is depicted in the center of the obverse. The inscription runs around it in capital letters: “Oldenburg’s citizens’ crown, one God, one truth, one right.” The reverse depicts an oak wreath. Inside it is the inscription, also in capital letters: “The Fatherland to its son.”
The ribbon is dark blue.
