The Order of the Star of Melanesia was established on 23 August 2005 by Elizabeth II of Papua New Guinea as an order of chivalry with a single grade. The government of Papua New Guinea awards this grade, called “Companion,” for merit. Three conditions must be met.
Important merit at a high administrative level for Papua New Guinea, the Asia-Pacific region or humanity as a whole.
The merit must have inspired people at the national level.
The recipient must have been active for at least fifteen years.
