The Commemorative Cross for the Campaign of 1866 was instituted on 20 September 1866 by King William I of Prussia. It was awarded to all Prussian soldiers and officials who had taken part in an engagement during the Austro-Prussian War in 1866 or had crossed the border into an enemy state during the campaign. It was awarded in two versions: for combatants, in three variants, and for non-combatants. The number of combatant crosses awarded was approximately 144,000, while approximately 1,200 non-combatant crosses were awarded.
