The Bene Merenti Medal was instituted by King Carol I by Royal Decree No. 314 of February 20, 1876 (according to the Julian calendar), when he was still only a prince. It was the first civilian medal and was based on the model of the House Order of Hohenzollern, from 1857.
The Medal ceased to exist on July 31, 1931, when it was replaced by the Order of Cultural Merit.
