The Commemorative Cross of Elisabeta, also known as the Elisabeta Cross or the Cross of Relief and Consolation [Crucea Alinare și Mângâere], is a commemorative medal instituted by King Carol I by High Decree No. 2270 of October 6, 1878, to reward women who took part in caring for the wounded and sick, either directly in ambulances and field hospitals (doctors and nurses), or indirectly, through donations or other actions.
In recognition of the contribution made by Transylvanian Romanians to the achievement of independence, the Romanian government awarded the Elisabeta Cross to 13 Romanian women from Transylvania.
