The Order of 23 August was a Romanian decoration established by decree of the State Council of the Romanian People’s Republic No. 190 of 3 June 1959 (published in Official Bulletin No. 16 of 17 June 1959), whose purpose was to commemorate the overthrow, on 23 August 1944, of the dictatorial regime of Marshal Ion Antonescu by King Michael I of Romania.
The first people decorated were the participants in the coup d’état of 23 August 1944. Later, the Order was awarded to Romanian and foreign military and civilian personnel for achievements in scientific or political fields, for military training, for administrative and organizational activities, for courage in battle, and for services rendered to the working class. The decoration was conferred by decree of the State Council of the Romanian People’s Republic and later of the Socialist Republic of Romania.
