The Cross “For the Capture of Izmail” (Крест «За взятие Измаила») was a state award of the Russian Empire, bestowed on officers who took part in the capture of Izmail on 11 December 1790 during another Russo-Turkish War.
The cross was established on 25 March 1791 by Empress Catherine II in honor of the capture of the fortress of Izmail, which took place on 11 December 1790 by an army under the command of A. V. Suvorov. It was awarded to officers who had not received the Order of St. George or the Order of St. Vladimir for this battle. The award of the cross counted as three additional years of service toward receiving a pension or being awarded the Order of St. George, 4th class, for length of service.
Although the award was established on 25 March 1791, the striking of the crosses was postponed due to the death of the commander-in-chief, His Serene Highness Prince G. A. Potemkin, and began only in March 1792. By the autumn of 1794, 410 crosses had been struck. They continued to be presented to officers until the beginning of the reign of Emperor Alexander I.
This cross was the second in a series of similar crosses established in honor of a specific event.
