The Cross “For the Capture of Ochakov” (Крест «За взятие Очакова») was a state award of the Russian Empire, bestowed on officers who took part in the capture of Ochakov on 6 December 1788 during another Russo-Turkish War.
The cross was established on 14 April 1789 by Empress Catherine II in honor of the capture of the fortress of Ochakov on 6 December 1788. It was awarded to officers of Prince G. A. Potemkin’s army who had not received the Order of St. George or the Order of St. Vladimir for this battle. The award of the cross counted as three additional years of service toward receiving a pension or being awarded the Order of St. George, 4th class, for length of service.
A total of 410 crosses were struck. Each cost 29 rubles and 91 kopecks, and weighed about 35 g, equivalent to 35 chervonets.
This cross was the first in a series of similar crosses established in honor of a specific event.
The cross was made of gold. Its dimensions were 46 × 46 mm. It was an equal-armed, four-pointed cross with rounded ends. The central medallion was in the form of a horizontally oriented oval, with inscriptions on both sides.
