“For the Capture of Shlisselburg” is a medal awarded to soldiers of the Russian army who distinguished themselves in the assault on the Swedish fortress of Nöteborg. The reverse of the medal bears the inscriptions: “NOTTEBVRGVM•NVNC•SCHLVSSELBVRGVM” (in the Russian version, “Шлюсенбурхъ”), “It was in the possession of the enemy for 90 years,” and “Taken 21 October 1702.” The digits in the date were transposed; it should read 12. Other ranks were awarded silver medals, while officers were awarded gold medals. A commemorative silver medal with a diameter of 70 mm also existed. The medals were designed by the Russian master Fyodor Alekseyev. The medal was instituted in 1702.
