The Medal “Champion of Orthodoxy” (in the archives of the Saint Petersburg Mint, this medal is called “For the Present Military Occasion”) is a medal of the Russian Empire, instituted by Catherine II in 1769. According to researchers, the medal was intended to reward Greeks who had rebelled within the Ottoman Empire. The medal was made of silver. It depicts Catherine II, a collapsing mosque minaret against the backdrop of a raging sea, and a Christian cross.
