In 1899, Prince George of the small Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe instituted an Order for Art and Science (Orden für Kunst und Wissenschaft). In doing so, he followed the example of his relatives, who had established a chivalric order for cultural and scientific merit in Lippe-Detmold, as well as that of many other German princes and kings.
